February NaBloPoMo - Character

National Blog Posting Month, or NaBloPoMo, is a month long writing exercise intended to occur annually in November.
I am inviting everyone to join the NaBloPoMo challenge .  I don't know if I can do this task: posting everyday about a specific topic or challenge but maybe if I get several bloggy friends to  take the challenge together with me, I can finally do it!

 The FEBRUARY THEME: CHARACTER

"Cap'n said he'll wash himself down yonder..."
They found the soap and the empty lifering and looked at the angry sea, asking, where's the cap'n?

Spam! Hate them...or not?

No, I'm not talking about meat loaf.

Spam bloggers. Those who spam our commnets section.

Well, one can only hate them...or not.

If your a blogger or a webmaster or a high PR site, then form time to time, you will see a lot of posts coming from a very resourceful sploggers filling your comment filters.

Because of these unsolicited, unwanted comments, everyone has become paranoid. It's like living in a house with high gates and closed doors with built-in peepholes, visitors has to knock to be admitted! Unfriendly neighborhood, eh?

Recently, I have my share of spam comments coming my way, too!  have already put my comment filter to "moderated", meaning I have to approve people's thoughts to be posted or not. I hate them, because now I have to verify first the intentions of my commenter, are they legit, are they spams, do they mean what they say? I mean, it makes me lose faith! I'm sure a lot of commenters (the true ones) get slightly irritated if they are required to put in CAPTCHA before being posted. I know, because I comment, too on various posts that I find interesting.

But what constitutes a spam comment? From my experience:

  • it comes from Anonymous
  • it comes with a link - normally about explicit offers or a totally unrelated link to your website or blog that is commercial in nature
  • gibberish / worthless  text
  • misspelling and poor grammar - like a poorly spun article
  • comment body is unrelated to your site

But don't you feel a tweak of fun when you wade through your spam filter?  I have found several lame comments to ridiculous and totally unrelated to downright unintelligible. See some of them minus the irritating links below:

  1. Good article. Thank you
  2. Hi gomik!
  3. Here I always find a lot of helpful information for myself. Thanks you for your work.
  4. Enjoyed reading/following your page. Please keep it coming
  5. Thanks for the post. Good information for me
  6. Usable, they insist to be taught that filing lawsuits is not the nature to wantonness piracy.
  7. Mm, its fantastic-/
  8. Thanks for sharing this link - but unfortunately it seems to be down? Does anybody here  have a mirror or another source?
  9. Interesting for)) ff
  10. There are many interesting here. Hope to see some more in future

Are there more ways to filter them or to eradicate them altogether , other than putting my blog/website under comment moderation mode, that a noob blogger like me can do?

    Imagination...and Motivation Monday

Think, we always write impossible things, right?

I seldom succeed but I try every year anyway. Here's for my 2011:

    • Lose 10 lbs (I  got only 5 lbs off from my target 20lbs last year :(
    • Try to go vegan this year (I failed to cut off red meat last year :(
    • Get my own domain
    • Find a blog niche (what do you think is better: niche blogging or generalist?)
    • Get out of my 8to5 office work (I don't know if I can do this -- but I find no joy anymore...)
If you are looking for motivation and would like to read posts from others about their journey, check out Motivation Monday, hosted by Simply Stacie andKelly's Lucky You! Don't forget to holler and let them know that you've read (or followed) via comments...

SOFTD: 21 Guns by Green Day on a Fun Follow Friday

Ready to find new friends and discover beautiful blogs? Then come over at Fun Follow Friday. Of course, both hostesses blogs, Simply Stacie and My Wee View   would love for you to follow  but it isn't mandatory.

Happy Weekend, everyone! Just leave a comment so I can return the favor!

My song of the day would be 21 Guns by Greenday.

    An excerpt of the lyrics:

When you're at the end of the road
And you lost all sense of control
And your thoughts have taken their toll
When your mind breaks the spirit of your soul

Your faith walks on broken glass
    And the hangover doesn't pass
    Nothing's ever built to last
    You're in ruins

    One, 21 guns
Lay down your arms, give up the fight

Quote of the Day...and then some.

It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog. ~~~ Mark Twain

    Just a random thought...

Fans of blood sports,  take this to heart! To be sure, one of your lolos, or grandparents or uncles is familiar to the long tradition of blood sports involving animals from spiders to horses here in the Philippines. Cock fighting is perfectly legal and is in fact a cherished cultural institution. I heard some groups want to legalize spider fights. Betting in these activities run into the millions of pesos per event. I read somewhere that there has been a dog fighting ring (already busted?) years ago somewhere in Antipolo, Rizal.

Dog fighting is illegal, of course.

The Animal Welfare Act of 1998 (Republic Act No. 8485) provides:

"Sec. 6. It shall be unlawful for any person to torture any animal, to neglect to provide adequate care, sustenance or shelter, or maltreat any animal or to subject any dog or horse to dogfights or horsefights, kill or cause or procure to be tortured or deprived of adequate care, sustenance or shelter, or maltreat or use the same in research or experiments not expressly authorized by the Committee on Animal Welfare."

    Another (totally unrelated) random thought...
I just saw on TV the other night how the rich pamper their litlle poochies, how they dress them up like toy acessories or blings. Heartless.

    Maybe it's just me.

Just thought out of the blue: Have you ever dreamed you could fly?

I always dreamed of falling. Not flying like an eagle. Or like angels on butterfly wings. No, not that. I fly DOWNWARDS  -- falling off  deep crevasses.
Most of the time I wake up not remembering why I fell, only that I did.
    I don't know if it's a good thing.
What about you? Have you ever dreamed you could fly?

Do you believe that mobile money is the new credit card?

Gizmodo even reports that you can make mobile payments for your
Starbucks drinks  using your cellphone's BlackBerry or iOS Starbucks
    apps.
All you have to do is load up your Starbucks Card, download an app,
and let your favorite barista scan a barcode generated by that app
    when paying for something.
I wonder though when will this Starbucks app be available here in Asia?
The rest of the world have to wait, though, as this  particular
payment option is offered only  in all US company-operated stores for
    now  :(
Cashless, hassle-free.  Here in the Philippines, more and more people
are using their cellphones as medium for money transfer. I've used
GCash and Smart once or twice to send money in the province. Just
don't let snatchers or the local "mandurukot" grab your phones LOL.

Me and the new Zodiac Sign

Last year, I was just the good ol' bull, Taurus. Now, some people say I'm an Aries!

All this hype was according to astronomers with the Minnesota Planetarium Society   there's about a one-month bump in the alignment of the stars caused by the effect of the moon's gravitational pull on the Earth through the millenia.
Even "the teddybear", a former Saggitarian, is under the new zodiac (the 13th)  named OPHIUCHUS the SNAKE HOLDER. This zodiac is after a real person, IMHOTEP. (more about Ophiuchus here and here).
Anyway, as food for thought, I will compare the known traits of Tarus and Aries based on my on
    TAURUS
    Patient and reliable
    Warmhearted and loving
    Persistent and determined
    Placid and security loving
    On the dark side....
    Jealous and possessive
    Resentful and inflexible
    Self-indulgent and greedy
    ARIES
    Adventurous and energetic
    Pioneering and courageous
    Enthusiastic and confident
    Dynamic and quick-witted
    On the dark side...
    Selfish and quick-tempered
    Impulsive and impatient
    Foolhardy and daredevil

I suppose, there is a bit of an Arian in me except the traits in  paler shades (in fact, I'm slooowww to anger). I don't know if  we have these traits because it's in our stars or  we unconsiously emulate our known zodiac signs. What do you think?
What about you? Are you having zodiac identity crises yet?

    2. I love the smell of cut grass in the morning, especially after the rain.
    3. I love the smell of vanilla and jasmine.
What about you? What is your favorite smell?

    Why I blog

At first, it was just out of curiosity. I was intrigued that blogging could create an online persona and make someone's presence felt on the web! I thought that I can be true yet hide in the cloak of cyber anonymity. I can rant, say anything I want, shout my angst to the world without giving myself too much.

But then as I went on with my online journey, my joy of reading and writing has deepened my blogging purpose.  I realized that I cannot really separate myself from my cyber personality, it was like discovering myself all over again as I see the world on paper. I come across great blogs that help widen my point of view of the world! Online friends are an added bonus, too!

I blog to share. I blog to learn. I blog to inspire even in small ways and be inspired, too!

I blog because this is what I love to do.

This is an entry to a blogging contest sponsored by Life with Ria and WebSpark.net.
